Default Why are people buying the 1.8 vs the 2.8?

I'm not sure why? I drove the 1.8 (although looking at S4's) and it's really dogggy. There is not a 1.8 and a 1.8T, right?

Is the attraction just to be able to play with the boost of the turbo etc? Or is there much more then that?

If money was not a concern (only between the 1.8 and 2.8 (not S4)!! What would you buy?
the
1.8 manual quattro
-or-
2.8 manual quattro

and why?

Thanks

Tory

because for $500 it can outperform the 2.8, and it handles better to boot, plus it costs less...reason enough?

1.8T has:
Is +/- $4000 less expensive
More low end power
More aftermarket performance accessories

2.8 has
More refinement
More luxurious orientation in trim

Even if I had all the money in the world, 1.8T would get the nod from me.

Default Okay point me to tuning resources that for <more>

$500.00 you can get more performance out of the 1.8T then the 2.8?

Although I see that the Horsepower for 2001 has increased by +20 on the 1.8t, so the 1.8t and the 2.8 are within 20 hp of each other. Yes easy to overcome with a turbo (depending on how it's setup and controlled). In a Mitsu for example you can simply bleed off pressure so that the wastegate opens later, which means more boost (no idea how the audi is setup, would be a completely new car to learn)..

Now would you buy the 1.8t quattro and dump $$ in it, or buy the S4?

Thanks, just trying to educate myself.

Default Lots of tuners sell ECU (chip) upgrades...

I purchased mine from Audi Performance & Tuning (APR): http://www.goapr.com
You may also want to look at http://www.giacusa.com/ and there are a host of other tuners that offer "chip" upgrades. You can find a lot of information in the archives about chip upgrades.

Because the 1.8T engine is a turbo, it provides a relatively inexpensive method for dramatically increasing performance. For example, the APR chip I purchased is claimed to provide 200hp and 245 lb-ft. The seat-of-the-pants performance improvement is incredible!

I purchased the 1.8T because it is more easily tunable, and less expensive. I didn't care for the extra luxuries the 2.8 has to offer or the additional smoothness and refinement from a 6-cylinder engine like the 2.8.

Both are great cars and may appeal to different people. If you want the power "right out of the box" and you do not want to worry about possible warranty issues aftermarket performance improvements may bring, the 2.8 may be for you. Of course, you can always add a supercharger to the 2.8 :-)

Personally, I saved some money got a great car and then chipped it to make it even better.<p>Wayne H.

Default I am ready to order a 2.8 'cause...

I am ready to order a 2.8 'cause I want leather, 'cause I want power seats with lumbr support, 'cause I like the slightly nicer interior, 'cause its already faster out of the box and don't want to bother with chipping.

Default If you want speed but cant afford an S4 the 1.8T is the only way to go

Sure it's somewhat of a dog stock but put a chip in and you'll run circles around any 2.8 out there... now the S4.... well a 1.8T with a chip will afford you a nice view of his tail lights as he speeds away, a 2.8 would just render him invisible to the naked eye

THe TURBO!@!! S4 is like 15 grand more
the 1.8t is less insurance then the S4 also
can do more to an 1.8t cause its more fun making your car faster then just having a plain fast car... all you can do to a S4 is chip it but other things will cost alot of money for ex. like better turbo's better exhuast but who would waste money on that when its already hooked up?<p>2000 audi a4 1.8 Turbo. tinted windows, did the lights now wondering about a chip, acucally not wondering i want to chip it with apr
