Default Why is the shift from 1st to 2nd not smooth??? (more)

This is my first manual tranny so I'm not familiar w/ their characteristics...

MY2001.5 QM

These are my observatons.

1) When engine is off, moving the shifter from 1st gear position to 2nd gear positon is smooth. It just slides back effortlessly.

2) Engine is on (when I'm driving), as I pull back on the shifter about mid way it feels as if a mysterious bump appears in the path of the shifter.
So from 1st, it goes back about 1/2 way then a little to the right (going around the bump), back to the left then into 2nd gear.

Is this the way it is on other cars????

Thanks....

Default Give it time it'll soften up.

I've had 2 A4s and both were the same way. It's especially bad in cold weather but give it about 1000 Miles.

Default It happens on mine.....and twice I misshifted from 1st-2nd......

and that's NOT a nice sound and my heart skipped a beat. Audi is notorious for notchy 1st-2nd shifts. Just take it easy and just remember to shift carefully when you do that. All these happened 2-3 months ago when I bought my 2001.5 and now it's just common sense for me to shift from 1st-2nd.

Default My 99 2.8 quattro with 43,000 miles does the same thing which leads me to believe that

the Neuspeed and UUC short shifters are popular modifications for that very reason.......I dunno

Default You need to use the left-most pedal. It usually makes a pretty big difference.

Honestly - you didn't mention this step!
