will 235/40-18 provide curb protection on 8.5 rims? or 255/35-18

I currently have 17x8 rims with 225/45-17 tires and my rims are all fscked up. Wondering if 235/40-18's are wide enough to protect 18x8.5 rims? Or should I go with 255/35-18, which is actually a better match for stock rolling radius anyway.
My car is currently lowered with bilsteins and HR sports. I'll prob need to roll the fenders with either 235s or 255s.
Thanks, appreciate the knowledge
