Will a 235/40/18 tire fit on a 18 x 8 rim? Does it have to be 18 x 8.5 to fit 235?

Go to

Click the Tires link up top.
Click the "Browse by Brand" link on the right.
Select your preferred Tire Manufacturer.
Select the tire you are curious about.
Click the blue "Tech" link above tire descripion.
Here is listed all the sizes for that tire, and the "Rim Width Range" column lists the range of rim widths that tire and size can properly fit on.

this are the tire sizes that tire rack deems acceptable. in reality, tire stretching (which is the opposite of what you want to do) is ok to do with tires as well. and MANY tires are TUV approved to be stretched.
