Default Not in most cases...

Usually you should not worry about gum because of it's chemical composition. Some gums out there may cause damage if they are in the right conditions. I'm talking about those that are high in acidity (sour gums) or contain types of -phenes such as gum with crystals or embeddes mints. These may soften the clear coat or bring it to a haze from a chemical reaction. Heat exasperates any chemical or physical change in paint.

Try using a solvent such as goofoff first then clean the paint with a cleaner.

Default Also...

There is a cold spray (freon or something similar) that is used to clean gum out of carpets. You spray it on the gum to freeze it and then you pick it off all in one piece. Otherwise you will be pulling it out like taffy

Default I love cold spray, you can also use compressed air inverted but here's the warning...

if it's been there for a long time (more than a week) and the weather has gone through more than 2 cycles I wouldn't try it just yet. The longer it exists on the paint, the more chance the gum has seeped int0o the microscopic grooves of the clearcoat, thus allowing it to GRIP when you try to remove it. Freezing the gum will likely chip the whole paint layer right off the sheet metal as the metal contracts and the gum holds the paint wide open.

Default it's not the gum i know about, it's just chemistry

if it's there for long periods of time, and you've have several environmental cycles (hot cold hot cold). I would highly recommend using WD-40 on the area. You might want to spray the area with alot of wd-40 or goofoff then tape a small square of plastic over the area and seal it tight. Wait 2 hours, remove the plastic, reapply, and try removing the gum with floss. If this doesn't work, you'll need to add an environmental cycle, so grab a hair dryer and a can of compressed air, repeat above but apply after heating for a couple seconds, and apply BEFORE cooling with inverted can. Repeat until it comes off.

Default Works for hair not paint

Peanut butter contains a same fatty acid that resides in eggs. Eggs accelerate discoloration on rich colored cars, red, blue, back. ever seen an egged car that has been sitting in the sun for a day? NOT PRETTY ;-P

Default How about heating it up?

So it gets softer, then you can try Goo Off for the stuff left over on the clear coat. Never tried this myself though.
