will some 16x8" 40mm offset wheels, with 245/45/16" tires fit on the A4?

you are running 35mm offsets & 255 tires still have 2mm gap? Do you use any spacers?
I've been using 225/50/16 tires myself too, but have no problem at all.
Is it the same on different years of A4's?

so rolled fenders, modified fender lining, all do nothing for the inside. You even use 255 tires plus super low. This sound like 245/45/16" tires won't hit the shocks for sure...

there is a great deal of variation between brands within each section width. For instance, the 225 Toyo tires are much narrower at the tread than the Dunlop's in the same size.
245-225/2=10mm closer to the shock if you keep the 45 offset. If you go to a 35 offset the net effect is zero as you've moved the centerline outward that same 10mm. Then the issue might become hitting on the outside .. rolled fender and clearenced liners as Ed has done.
