qfrog is one of the best Audi parts guys I know and he spends quite a bit of time on here...he's doing a standalone engine management install into his A4, thats what I call hardcore. Also, the parts guy where I work is also an enthusiast and he also manages to get me the right parts as well.
Not all parts consultants are created equal.

My parts manager is great, also, but I bet he has no idea what a B5 is. Ask an Audi tech what a B5 is, lets say 40% know, ask a parts guy....10% if you're lucky. I'm just saying don't expect the guy to know a B5, if you can't get anywhere with the VIN, then you can say he is an idiot and you are right/he is wrong.

But he also knows every other chassis code too. If you can find it, he wrote an article for the quattro quarterly about Audi parts. I scanned the pages of it if you would like to read them, they're on my website listed below. The parts guy where I work currently has owned a B5 A4, D2 A8 and now an A5 A3, so he has some pretty diverse knowledge as well.
I guess my point here is to not make general assumptions about parts guys...hell I have even worked with some old school guys who were around for the aircooled VWs and have part numbers stuck in their heads for all that old stuff, as well as knowing all the new stuff as well.

Phil's parts article

I know who qfrog is, you don't need to point that out, but I can understand your point of view. It really isn't necessary for him to be offended if he reads this, obviously I was generalizing. The OP wasn't asking if he had the ONLY retarded parts guy in the country, to which I replied EVERY single one of them are retarded. When I said "if he's on here, he should know a B5", I said that as a statement, not a question. Ok, I'll rephrase it, GENERALLY, parts guys aren't engineers or enthusiasts or owners of 3 B5's, one of which they install stand-alone engine managment, and you shouldn't expect them to know a B5. They work with VINS and model years.
I don't come on here to offend anyone, usually to gain some info or experience. Just trying to set the OP straight on this occasion.
