The windshield on my 2000 A4 Avant 1.8T took a pebble from a semi and has quickly developed a large crack. I have never had this happen before, despite numerous pebble shots. Anyone else have this problem. I am just wondering if the Audi windshields are a bit weak.

During a splendid pre-Christmas snow storm once a few years back, my wipers weren't doing a very good job, so I stopped at a gas station to buy a **** pair of Anco's just to get me home. I removed the old blades and, when I wasn't looking, the old goon at the pump came over to mount the new ones. He bumped the bare wiper arm and it smacked down onto the glass. CRACK. The new blades didn't fit, so now I had ****ty blades AND a cracked windshield.
I always thought the reason for this happening was, being a German car designed for high-speed Autobahn travel, the spring force pressing the wiper onto the glass was comparatively high.
It never occured to me that the glass might be weak.
I took another pebble impact about six months ago and have been driving with a small, almost imperceptible crack on the passenger side. If it grows, I'll have the windshield replaced again. Massachusetts comprehensive insurance covers glass replacement 100% with no deductible.

I had a '67 Volvo in which the glass, while pretty blasted, never cracked. My '67 vette cracked but it got hit by a golfball sized rock (it still hasn't spread very far. I have driven Taurus's each new for the past 7 years and they all cracked from small dings. They just don't make it as thick. One year one of the back windows (the car was brand new) exploded before I even had a chance to roll it down! Wierd, eh.

The pit was easily patched (1 hr) and the crack was sealed and drilled so that it wouldn't spread from the bottom left corner where it happened.
The glass on the Audi seems a little soft... none of my Honda's had the windshield crack or pit so quickly, but then again they are throwing larger and larger rocks on the road here (Colorado) when it snows.

So maybe there is something to it.
Reading between the lines of the bulletin I gather they are having to replace a bunch of windshields.
