Won't restart on first try after driving a short distance
Occasionally when trying to start the car, the check engine light appears and a strange noise comes from the dash (only while trying to turn over the engine, which it doesn't do). Yet it always starts on the second try. I understand this is a common problem and couldn't find any answers while searching the archives. Any thoughts before I take it in to the shop?

If you don't warm engine in cold weather (more)
This is true for the 30v, I'm not sure about the 12v engine. This has happened to me twice now, and has happened to others with 1.8 and 2.8 30v.
The first time it happened was last winter, I moved car out of gargage into the driveway and shut it off right away. The temp was below 32 degrees, the next morning the car wouldn't start. I eventually got it to start after cranking for awhile.
Just recently I dropped off my car at a body shop, it was 4 degrees when I dropped it off on a Sunday night. On Monday morning, they started it, moved it into the shop and shut it off. They were never able to get it running again. I came to the shop to pick it up a week later and same deal. I finally decided to pull the spark plugs. When I pulled the plugs they were dripping with gas. The shop cleaned them with a sand blaster and we put them back in, and the car came to life. It ran rough at first and I got a check engine light. I figured the check engine light would be a misfire. When I got home I hooked the car to my laptop and sure enough the DTC were a misfire. I cleared them and haven't seen them since.
From what I understand is the engine uses a lot of fuel on startup, and if you don't give the engine a chance to warm up, especially in cold weather you have a good chance of getting a flooded condition. Some times you will be able to recover and get the engine started or maybe not. When this happens and people bring their car to the dealer, I understand the dealer cleans the plugs and puts them back in.
