My 98 a4 2.8 quattro engine seems like it is running hot. My gauges don't indicate the engine is hot though. When i removed the oil cap after driveing steam rose from it. should i be worried cause i am. tell me it's normal.

the oil in your engine has 200-250 degrees, and everything around it does too. Do you expect it to be "cool" to touch???
As far as the steam, I don't know. What kind of oil are you using? Are you sure there is enough oil in there? Send a sample of your oil for analysis - it will tell you if there is something wrong going on inside like antifreeze leaking in, fuel getting in, or other stuff.

How come you checked the oil so late? Maybe the quite common condensation form short-distance driving started to burn off! Drive that car for half an hour at highway speed and check again for steam.
If you are afraid your engine gets too hot, check the coololant level and check the condition of the coolant with a 5 dollar hygrometer.
As for the engine being abnormally hot, I don't know any engine that can be comfortably touched once it's reached operating temperature, but maybe I'm just a sensitive idiot. :-P
