Worried about oil level

Just hitting 1000 miles on A4. Recently checked the oil level and it was "below the grid" on the dipstick, down near the plastic. So I added a quart. Not sure if car was fully warmed up, though, when I did all this.
Now when I check the oil, it's way up past the grid and onto the plastic above that.
So I've gone from what the owner's manual would call a "must add oil" level to a "must not add oil" level.
Is this okay? I know I should know these things, but in previous cars I almost never had to add oil between oil changes, so I'm not experienced with this. I'm concerned that I may have gotten a misleading reading when I first thought the oil was low.
Unless the car is really in imminent danger, though, I'll probably leave it alone - first service is going to be next week as it turns out.
Thanks for educating me!

I went to my mechanic and he said every thing seemed to be fine, not sure about your car. But I also read that it is normal for Audi's to need oil between oil changes. But nothing to worry about. At least that's what I think.

From my experience, the 2.8 engine burns about 1-quart of oil every 3,000-4,000 miles. No exception. My family owned a 1991 100CS, 1992 Cabriolet, and currently owned a 1998 A4 2.8q Avant and a 1999 1/2 A4 2.8q sedan.

This is what I've found:
If you check the oil level when completely cold the level is somewhere near the low (oils expand and contract with temperature)
So the best way to check the oil (I read somewhere) is to let the engine warmup a bit and check the level after 5mins or so.
