Would 35% tint be too dark for rear windows? Also...

would it look bad if the front windows were tinted lighter than rear windows (might need to do this to avoid problems with inspection). At what percentage tint does the windows start to get too dark to see out of at night? Thanks for any help!!

You could tint all windows but make the rear ones darker than the front ones so it appears on a relative basis that you're lawful. In my opinion it looks unbalanced but that's in the eye of the beholder.
Also, if you ever get pulled over by the fuzz and you've got illegal front window tint, you should always roll down your front windows all the way and hope he/she didn't notice (at the very least it won't draw attention to the windows).

I have one car w/ 35% vlt all around excpt front (legal in TX). At some dark rainy nights it was severely limiting side visibility. Anything darker and you will not be able to back up safely.
On my A4 I went w/ the best titanium film 50% all around. I am happy w/ it. I do not think I would tint the front even if lawful 'cos it introduces a little optical grainy-ness.

I was leaning towards 35% tint all around but was kinda worried about visibility at night... but then I also remember reading some posts a while back on this forum from people saying that 50% seemed a bit too light...

Here in AZ the law is 35% max on the driver/passenger door windows and anything on the others. Most people here go with 35% fronts and 20% all others.
35% alone is really light. Using that on the fronts with a darker tint on the rear/rear doors will make it appear darker, but going with all 35% would be a very subtle difference...albeit with good UV protection with mild sun/heat protection.
I had 35% fronts, 20% all others on my '96 A4 and it wasn't dark enough for my taste. Notice in the photo how you can see in from the rear windows. This tint combo also left a lot to be desired in the summer here.

On my '98 I went with 20% fronts and 5% (often referred to as "limo tint") on the rear doors/rear window (photo below). To me, this is just right...

The rear window can be difficult to see out of in very dark areas, but I've never felt it was unsafe. It's also been great with a baby back there because it really does cut down sunlight penetration and heat.
BTW -- I'm using Llumar Titanium metalic tint now, had Llumar metalic on the '96 and it's been great.
