...using Meguiars (as an example) rim cleaner several times a week to clean the wonderful, black brake dust off of my wheels?
Are the chemicals too harsh (like using draino on your pipes) and should only be used on occasion or is this fine?
Will the chemicals hurt anything underneath such the brake pads, calipers??

For those of us that wax our wheels, we stick to plain old soap and water. Rewaxing is a pain in the a$$. 3 times a year I give the rims a full work up, front and back, so I break out the wheel cleaner for that...that's the only time I use it.

When I give them the full treatment, I clean the front and back of the rims, then wax all of it...2 coats...then back on the car. That's for the aftermarket rims, which have a clearcoat on the backside of the rim as well. The OEM wheels are pitted and nasty on the back side, so I clean them, but there is really no point in waxing them. There is no clearcoat there to protect.
