would a supersprint muffler sound like crap without its resonator?

Default It will be louder. The sound will be nicer.. Much deeper tone(more)
I took out the cat also
So my whole system is only a pipe and small brullen muffler at the end. It's loud, but I got used to it. but the tone is amazingly deep. Great sound.

Default check out euopean car's website - they did a Jetta 1.8t exhaust test and used a supersprint....
without a resonator. It was still quieter that some of the units WITH a resonator.

clarification please: do u mean that it will be deeper sounding WITH the resonator?
