Default X post from A6 forum: Lowered car leads to broken rear axle...

<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/426597.phtml">Believe it or not</a>

Yeah, I didn't believe it either when I heard my buddy on the phone telling me that he had an axle break, and the shop he had it towed to said it was from being lowered.. Well, it is, but there's more to it than that.

The axle contacted the lower spring perch, which apparently caused it to tip, which caused the C clip to come out of it's groove. When that happened, the spring unloaded itself onto the axle. I do not know how he didn't notice this, but he apparently did not..

Default How do you know the C clip didn't fail first...

resulting in the rest of the damage? I just don't understand how the axle would come into contact with the lower perch if the C clip was holding the perch properly.

Default Because there is less than an inch between the axle and the spring perch...

hit one big bump, bam, contact. The other side clearly has hit too, and it's still sitting tight on the C clip.

Default

if the car ever uses a lot of suspension travel, even on stock suspension, it will tag the spring?

Default What am I missing here?

The lower portion of the shock and the axle should BOTH move upward when you hit a bump in the road, unless the shock was disconnected from the lower arm.

Default Yeah, but the axle moves on a different plane...

If you look at the last pic in the series, you can see that the axle is worn just to the left of that label on the axle, and just above it, on the lower spring perch, there is wear from the contact as well...

Okay...I see it...barely. I guess that falls under the category "major suckage".

Default I doubt it. The owner of the car wanted it on the lowest of the 3 possible slots on the shock...

which made the rear extremely low. Due to the angle of the axle, it was able to make contact. I would guess with a slightly longer spring, it might have been fine.

Default Are those bilsteins rather than konis? They have the grooves cut into them

In addition, it doesn't appear to be that the car was too low....it looks like the spring perch was too low causing it to contact the axle. Just get lower springs and keep the spring perch higher and it doesn't look like we'd have any problems. just my observations...what do you think

Default Right! But, the rear was much lower than the front..

This shot is with nothing in the trunk, not even the spare, and you can see how low it was..

I think with the perch on the 'stock setting, it would have been fine.

Also bear in mind, he was carrying around 'adult entertainers' in his car, replete with sound system and stuff, so it had a good load.
