Default You take it for granted sometimes...

For the past 6 months, I've been driving my 99.5 santorin/ecru 2.8qm, taking for granted the precise steering, the absolute traction, the shear responsiveness, and the all-around fun of the vehicle. Only occasionally driving the Significant Other's Corolla (a fine, if not fun, car).

So, visiting the family for the holiday, I'm required to haul some of the elders around. Of course, they don't bend the right way to accomodate the oh-so-spaciou back seat, so I'm off in Mom's Chevy Tahoe.

Oh wow.

Sloppy. Mushy. Like driving a 2-story house from the back bathroom without windows in the attic.

At least 10 degrees of play in the steering wheel. The brakes were merely decorative, from what I could tell. The body roll was so bad I needed a dramamine when I was done.

Drove both it, and the A4 along unpaved, single-lane country backroads, and the A4 was a much better road (and had better traction).

Upon returning to my car, great happiness returned, as did a sense of actually controlling the sheet-metal wrapped around me, as opposed to simply barrelling down the road in an unstoppable box of a sport utility vehicle.

They think that SUV's are safer, due to collision survival. But personally, I'd prefer to jump out of a plane with a parachute, and avoid the collision, as opposed to wrapping myself in 3 tons of foam before leaping out.

Man... (and I used to drive an Explorer, so you'd think this wouldn't bother me so much.)

Default Not me. I do a lot of business travel...

and I have to drive all kinds of rentals like Escorts, Proteges, Contours, etc.
So I always have something to look forward to when I get off the plane and head to the garage.
Although, at Logan every other car in the garage is an A4 so I have to remember where I park!

There's no comparison, but I'm actually looking forward to trying out the new Focus on a future trip...finally some American competition in the Civic/Corolla catergory.

Drove my parents Tahoe. Hit the brakes and I didn't think it would ever stop. Very scary.
