I was thinking about painting the lower grill and when I removed it I decided to try some mesh instead. This is plastic mesh they sell for gutters. It was $3 for about a 3ft X 10" wide roll. I cut it with some wire cuttters and attached it using three zip ties at the very top. Living in snow country I didn't want to add a front spoiler, so I think I will be happy with this.

Yup. Open the hood an reach in from the top, behind the bumber. There are two clips (like the ones on the top grill - to get an idea of what you are looking at blind) at each end of the grill. Push them towards the center of the car and the grill pops out. No tools needed.
