Default exhaust = biggest waste of money on the A4... unless you step up in turbo size

stock is fine and going too large you lose too much low end torque.

if it's the style you want add 2 tips. IF you want the sound then well you have no choice but to dump money away for sound.

4k to spend on performance mods... Stasis Tracksport Suspension

Default

you won't loose low end torque from a large exhaust. that's myth.

Default The torque band goes up in the RPM, therefore you don't "Lose" it since its there but at a higher

RPM point. If the exhaust is opened up too much it will move the torque band up.

Default You should continue to gain torque with a larger diameter exhaust....

Indeed with the Thermal race and 3" piping, we see an increase in torque across the board. This researcher expalains it this way...

Default up to a point. Having 0 back pressure from running an unrestrictive exhaust will push the torque

band up significantly. This provides more HP(drags cars come to mind), but less torque down low. There are plenty of books available on the subject of 4 stroke exhaust design. Only when the system is too restrictive is opening it up a good thing, but if you go too far you'll give up the bottom end that our cars need so damn badly.

Default Make a donation...

to my "Help Me Finish My Mods" charity

I would do the CO's, seeing that you'll have new wheels soon. This, along with your Ultra Sport will make your car look amazing. No need for a body kit. And also get some power upgrades (chip/injectors, exhaust,..). Get some Motul oil/fluids too. Might also consider the MTM exhaust, unless you need more noise. A BBK as well, if you have anything left. Depends on what you get.

Default I can buy that without a doubt, but even the hardcores on the B6 forum arent running....

a strait pipe to the fender I don't believe we'll face these issues with ANY aftermarket exhaust system including a custom 3". I'm running the 3" and soon a 3" testpipe (currently a completely hollowed out cat) with no ill effects. Thermal is one of the biggest exhausts you can buy aftermarket and it just happens to post the most gains as well. Crank horepower gains on the same car and the same dyno showed 15hp and a bad a$$ 27lb/ft of torque gain. That's pretty impressive and I think goes to show what a properly designed exhaust with extrememly low back pressure (this thing is pretty loud) can achieve. I'd like to read more about this, though. Most of the research i have found has gone so far as to say that the perfect exhaust for a turbo engine like ours would be in the shape of a horn coming off the turbo. Let me know if you know some cool sites that can give me some more info. Cheers! Mike
BTW, your wheels are bad a$$. Let me know when your done with them!

Default You need to go do a dyno....

and see what the MTM Stage 3 (along with the addition of the Thermal exhaust and "hollowed" CAT) is producing. How about going to Champion Motorsport and using their Dynojet? Too far away?

Also, were you saying that the Thermal exhaust was a full 3" system? As far as I knew, it was varied in dia. from front to rear (2.5", 3", 2.25").

Default You are correct on the dimensions...

you know the story of the dyno. I really should have had it dynoed all along to chart out the baseline on that dyno. What i'd really like is access to a MAHA. I wonder about taking it to a dyno like a mustang, where it would be pretty easy to come up with 40 or so horsepower based on conditions (temp, airflow, blah, blah). They we'd have to try and assume the drivetrain loss and that's just a rough estimate. Nevertheless for $100 or so i'll definitely do it. I'll do a search for champion. I'd be willing to drive if it's a couple hours or so. Cheers! Mike

Default I know...

I've had thoughts about how it might compare to the MTM (given the MTM had a DP w/o the CAT). With the varied pipe diameters of the Thermal, that wouldn't make it the biggest, since the MTM is a full 70mm [2.756"] system from end to end.
I also had concerns of what kind of flow restriction/turbulence would be produce in the Thermal, when the dia. is changed/reduced. It'd be interesting to make a clear model of both and see/test the differences inside with air flow.

It would have been nice to have a baseline, but I think it's still worth it to see where it's at now.

Champion is in Pompano Beach.

Champion Motorsport
