You need a cable with USB on one end and the standard ECU connection on the other and PC compatible software. Here is where I got my cable, although there are several sources:

The thing I like about this company is they have a link to the Ross-Tech website where you download the software, plus good instructions on how to get your laptop set up which for a non PC person (me) was the most difficult part since it took me a while to understand you had to set up 2 different ports to make the cable communicate with the car.
Anyway, there is a "freeware" version of the software which is all I have and successfully dignosed several problems on my car from alarm (was my door locks not locking because my door jamb harness was bad) to an emissions fault which turned out to be an SAI loose connection (most shops would have reaplced the cat) to an ESS, etc, etc. Ross-Tech also has a version which has more diagnostics plus the ability to map internal ECU parameters like actual fuel flow, timing advance, etc for tuners. They also have a mapping of all the codes:
