Default Try shifting in to 2nd. Then in to 1st.

I haven't had this problem on my Audi but helped with previous cars.

Default VW/Audi gear boxes notoriously notchy and tempermental IMO.

AMS SS might help some and a better synth fluid like Motul Gear 300 or FUCHS Syn5 perhaps too. I think it is just inevitable though. They have a poor design with their manuals. Maybe the syncros... I just remember many years of trouble with my VW manuals.

In neutral, let the clutch out and then back in- it'll slow the still-spinning tranny parts.

Default Funny, I was thinking about the same thing this morning.

I've noticed also that the tranny has gotten notchier over time. I'll probably bring it up at the 20k service. Not sure what they'll do about it. Maybe replace the tranny fluid or something.

Default yep, 'double clutching'...lines everything back up. also hard to get into first when in cold

weather, cold/heavy fluid.
this seems to be a german car thing. over the years the E320 we had ran and shifted hard when cold. '99 MZ3 (bad), '99 e36 M3 (worse), and the current e46 M3 SMG (worst).
just drive it easy and double clutch (if hard to get in gear) until everything warms up.
