Default I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but....

how many think the dealer could've noticed at the 50k service... or is this the kind of thing that can be fine one day and done the next day?

Default Yeah, I think they all are. My B5 A4 1.8T had one and it cracked and came loose

allowing the shaft to turn and the impeller not to.

Default Second that... clearly a manufacturer defect...

I notice that in the aftermarket, they make a point of telling you they use metal impellers... must be for a reason!

No way to tell unless they took the water pump off to inspect it.

Default had the same thing happen to my B5 S4 but I shut it down before it took out the valve train

lost the pretensioners and the water pump though, that would suck

Default Anyone want to guess he mixed coolants?

Other then Dexcool, no other coolants are compatible with G-12. If the owner put something else in to top off then there could be some trouble.

Default Typical, a baseless analysis w/o merit. Please detail the process where mixing 2 liquids yields solid

Funnny, I've studied the chemistry of all engine coolants, and I don't see any equation where mixing 2 coolants yields sludge. I know Dexcool/G-12 will corrode when air is introduced into the system, ie: a leak. Typically, when a customes has a low system from a leak, instead of just adding water, a portion of the time they add another otc coolant, making a "mix". So after the system is clogging up from the air + OAT, the tech blame the customer for "mixing". it's a bad analysis and is wrong. ftr- Dexcool and G-05 is fully compatible and a splash of high silicate Prestone will not "sludge" or "gel", all coolants (except PG) are 97% ethylene glycol anyway. Hard to see how 3% corrosioin inhibitors are going to turn a liquid into a solid.

Default well, I tend to disagree about that being a possible cause...

There's a trade magazine that I try to read monthly. There was an issue that came out about a year and a half ago concerning this very issue about mixing coolants. The prevaling data is showing that mixing coolants won't result in catastrophic failures, except in extreme circumstances where one coolant's corrosion protection properties are diminished by another coolant, thereby necessitating more frequent changes.

PDF article
