I have 6500 miles on my 3.0QM and the clutch is still grabby like day one! The car jerks in the first 4 gears with 5th and 6th having a smooth clutch engagement. I have owned manuals all my life that had smooth clutches including a '97 2.8QM that had a exceptional smooth clutch.
Does the gen2 3.0 clutch need more miles to smooth out? Any info on fixing this by dumping the clutch a few times?
Does anyone have a similar history where the clutch was grabby and then smoothed out at a certain mileage? Most of my miles are highway so my clutch doesn't get used as a car in the city would.
It's just very annoying as I'm slipping the clutch in each gear to let the clutch engage smoothly.

My 1.8T is the first manual I have ever owned. For the first month I thought the rough and grabby transitions through the first three gears was just a sign of my poor shifting experience. I then drove a standard Golf TDI belonging to a friend of mine and was surprised at how smooth it drove... and how much better my shifting skills suddenly felt! About a month ago I took the 1.8T on a very long drive to visit my sister - about 2500K in total. Following that drive the clutch rapidly lost that grabby feel that you spoke of and over the last two weeks I have noticed a definite improvement in overall smoothness. Car now has 7500km on it and I am happy to say that the gear shifts are getting smoother and smoother with each passing week.

Length of clutch throw messes me up sometimes. I find an exaggerated and quick left foot off technique gives me smoothest shifts, but requires good coordination with throttle.
