Default 03 3.0 Check engine light.

Hey everyone.
My girlfriend has a 03 3.0 and the check engine light keeps coming on. Its still under warntee and so she took it in for service. The dealership told her it was because her gas cap wasnt on tight. (I didnt believe it) They reset the code and it was fine for about 2 weeks and now its back on. Does anyone know what it could be? The local dealership stinks they talk to her like she is clueless because she is a chick. She has brought it in for a few other items and they always give her the run around about fixing it. What do they care. They are getting paid for it.

Thanks for your replies.

Default It could very well be the gas cap. I had the same problem once...

make sure your gf turns the car off before taking the gas cap off, that could be a possible cause too.

Default yeah my sister's passat would give a CEL b/c of the gas cap...

she would only click it once after filling up. I click mine like 30 times after that happened.

Well I would have believed it if it only happened once. But this is the 2nd time. I'll ask her to click it more than once. Will the code clear itself or is there a way to do it without bringing it to the dealer?

Default If nothing is wrong the code will clear on its on,,,,,

Each time you start the car, the computer runs through a diagnostic sequence. If after a certain number of time ( don't remember the #) that it cycles and sees nothing wrong, the cel will shut off. If it does see something the CEL will stay on. I suggest giving it 2 weeks. If it does'nt shut off, than there is something wrong. If it shuts off and than comes back there is probably some intermittent sensor. The computer that they use ( VAG com) will give them the correct fault code so it can be fixed. Make sure she shuts the engine when gassing up and as has been said,, click the cap twice.
Good Luck

Default gas cap, or possibly bad gas...

we had the CEL come on all the time... stopped buying cheap gas and only good stuff (Shell, Mobil, Exxon, etc.). No more CEL.

The dealer should be able to determine from the code what the hell is causing it.

I read one click - the Audi gas caps don't click as easily as domestic makes' caps do.

Default It might be the cap, but I'd go to a different dealership or at least another service advisor

They need to be specific enough in explaining the problem to their customers so that it doesnt happen again.
