Default 1.8T folks: How's your idle?

I find my 800 RPM idle pretty rough...if I kick it up to 1,000 RPM, everything smooths out. Anyone else?

Default rough and loud when cold, smooth and quiet when warm...

...the difference is as much as I've ever noticed with any car.

When I first warm the car in the morning, it has a louder bass sound, especially noticeable from the exterior. After about 30secs to a minute of idling, that sound goes away and the car idles very quietly. It's almost like something switches off, because the sound goes away instantly, it doesn't just gradually fade.

Anybody else notice this, or have any idea what it might be?

I believe that's got something to do with an anti-pollution mechanism of some sort. It kicks in when the car is first started, then stops after a slight warm-up has occured.

Unfortunatly, mine seems to idle roughly warm or cold. I definatly get the harsh idle you describe when 1st starting up (which quickly stops), but mine stays pretty rough all the time. Funny thing is, if I just tap the gas to hold it at 1,000 RPM, it becomes perfectly smooth.

Default Yeah, the change to smooth is pretty sudden.

Engine management must be telling the car it's ready for normal operation and changes a bunch of parameters.

I usually begin driving right away. I don't sit and warm-up. I drive mega-mello at first. When you're water temp hits operating temp, the engine is about halfway ready to be flogged.

The car will feel noticably looser as well.

Default Very smooth idle .. Always. It's good to arm yourself with these responses before taking the car in

for service. Don't you hate it when they say, "that's normal" when you're pretty sure it's not?

Default My change takes about 2 seconds to happen...

And how do you know when exactly the engine is ready to be pushed? How long after water temp reaches operating temp?

Default Well, if Audi did it right, they would have left the damn...

...oil pressure gauge in the car. Miffs me. I would like the damn boost gauge back as well.

Well, at least the car was significantly cheaper without these two gauges.

What, am I in a German Taurus?
