Probably true, but 3.5 more years of current 3-series
As I understand, the 1-series (E81) is debuting as a 2005 model in late 2004, while the next 3-series (E90) is coming as 2006 model in late 2005. You're right that there should be a fair amount of similarity between the vehicles as they're sharing a lot of components and being built on the same line at BMW's Regensburg plant. The CS-1 concept car has taken a lot of heat from BMW fans, and the front end is rather hideous, but I actually like the look of its rear.

E46 debuted in late '98, so it'll be a 7-year run
BMW doesn't seem to be very consistent with its cycles. Some vehicles last six years, while others last seven. If they do an '03 E39 5-series, I think it'll have been around eight years.
