First post on this forum, so thanks in advance to those who take the time to read and/or reply. My '02 A4 B6 3.0Q 131,000 miles is having the same whining noise that seems to be P/S pump related. Had a new one installed yesterday from a highly regarded indy. New pump. New P/S vacuum hose. Proper clamp on hose to reservoir. Pen fluid. Also had Timing Belt Inspection which returned a "fairly new" verdict on the TB and WP. Tech immediately identified the sound as faulty P/S pump, and the pump was visibly covered in gunk. The whining noise continues and it is definitely emanating from the front of the engine. It is discernible as soon as the engine is turned over and sounds very similar to a bad stereo job alternator hum. Difficult to hear "the noise" on the road due to ambient noise, but put your ear near the the grill or pull into a parking deck and it's undeniable. Car is stock and I've spent the last couple weeks reading over threads, so I've done some homework. Any opinions welcomed.

Whining was due to new P/S Pump being faulty. Your car is only as good as the parts you use, but my indy is taking great care of me! Parts and labor covered for 36 months.
