Default 2002 A4 Battery Replacement--Vent Hose

Am replacing the battery on our 2002 A4 Avant. Bought a Die Hard battery from Sears vs spending twice as much at the dealer. The OEM battery has the connection for the battery vent hose on the end of the battery, vs the Die Hard has it on the side. The adaptor that came with the Die Hard doesn't mate with the OEM tube in the engine compartment, nor is it long enough to reach. Can I run without the vent tube connected? Suggestions? Thanks!!

My understanding is that the vent is for releasing hydrogen gas produced by the normal charging process of the battery. Also, to act as a drain for acid in the case the battery should overheat, keeping it away from any paintwork or components within the engine compartment.
