Default 2002 A4 Multitronic (CVT) Issues

I have a 2002 A4 1.8T CVT. Lately, it has started to feel like it's slipping in the 1500-1900RPM range under any condition -- highway speed or taking off from a stop.

I purchased a VAG-COM license a few days ago and pulled the code on my transmission:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 02: Auto Trans
Controller: 01J 927 156 CQ
Component: V30 01J 1.8l5VT USA 2032
Coding: 01001
Shop #: WSC 63351
1 Fault Found:
18113 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Adaptation Limit Reached
P1705 - 09-10 - Adaptation Limit Surpassed - Intermittent

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I've done a great deal of research and I'm pretty comfortable working on my car. That said, this is a little scary. I'm at 80,000 miles and everything else seems in tip-top shape.

From what I've gathered, I should upgrade to the 7-plate clutch from the 6-plate that is in there now. Additionally, based on the fault data above I will probably need to replace the hydraulic control unit. Since I have to pull the input shaft to do this (the clutch), I might as well rebuild the valve body while I'm in there.

Now, because of all of this and from talking to people today -- import auto specialist I know, transmission guy recommend by my friend and an Audi dealer -- they are telling me I might be better off just getting a remanufactured transmission and dropping that in.

There are a few TSB's from Audi regarding this issue, and from others on the forum I know it's a known issue.

What would you do if this were your car? I've had it since 45,000 miles and this didn't start happening until about 4,000 miles ago or so. Since then it's gradually gotten worse. As long as I use the shifter to keep the RPMs above 2000RPM, it runs fine.

All in all, how screwed am I?

Default you are going to buy a new CVT from the dealer and have them put it in

should be like 6-10K installed.

you will get a 1yr/12K warranty.

CVT FTW!

Fix it and sell it. CVTs aren't that reliable

yeah, I think I've decided to do exactly that.... I just hope it isn't going to cost me thousands and thousands of dollars to fix. I'll trade it in for a manual when I do...
