2002 A4 rear Audi license plate mounting???

I just got a new 1.8T Q A4 (silver/black/5spd/sport/BOSE/heated seats/moonroof/xenon) and also purchased one of those Audi silver plateframes to put around my rear license plate.
However I found this impossible. For some reason my car has a black plate that's mounted to the back that has holes for the plate itself. However, this black plate is too large and I can't mount the new platefram over it. Plus it looks stupid. Removing the black plate reveals no other screw holes for mounting a plate.
So my question is this: Do all 2002 A4s have this silly black plate? If so how to people mount other plateframes? Do they drill extra holes?
This is a pain!

It's the same on my car and was the same on my '98. What I did on both of them was remove the black plate and use a dremel tool to cut about a half inch off the bottom. This allows the plate frame to sit over top of the bracket and flush to the car.
It sucks, but once done it looks great (until you remove the plate frame, of course).
If you do go this route, one note: The black plate is screwed and glued to the car with heavy double-sided tape. Remove the licence plate, then remove the screws for the backing plate, then start pulling. It will come off with some effort. Good luck...

You can see in both pics that the black plastic is sticking out below the licence plate, and also below the 'quattro' plate frame. I eventually removed the piece on both cars, trimmed about a half inch off the bottom of it(the portion that sticks out), reinstalled it, and everything fit fine.

It's just plastic, and the cut edge will be covered by the plate frame, so I wasn't very meticulous about it. You could do it with a hacksaw or a steak knife if you wanted to. :>P
Good luck...

I DID get an Audi plate frame. On an A6 it will work/sit flish but not on an A4. I'll have to do the cutting which I was trying to avoid. Oh well. I wonder why Audi can't get the correct dimensions.
