Default 2002 having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd and vice versa (automatic)

2002 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro automatic with 135K on the odometer.

Like the subject says, the car seems to hesitate and make a bit of a "clunking" noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd or downshifting from 2nd to 1st. Any idea what this could be indicative of?

I just purchased this car, so if this is a sign of bad things to come, I'd rather dump it while I'm ahead and it's still functioning.

I am going to assume it's a 01V and not a CVT since it is a Quattro. The "clunking" could be a hard shift which might be fixed by replacing the 2 solenoids responsible for the 2-1 downshift pressure control, $200-$300 if you do the work yourself. I would guess 3-5 hours labor cost on top of that if someone does it for you. If you need to replace your trans with a new/rebuilt/used trans you will probably be in the $2000-$5000 range.

The first step is to have the car scanned to see if there are any error messages.

Good point. I didn't catch that he put quattro in there. Yeah, I know right there. Question for the general audience: would there be a VAGCOM code?

There would be a vagcom code if there was an electrical malfunction. Solenoids can fail mechanically, which will not show up on a scanner.

The other reason it is not cvt: he is talking about 1-2 shifting. Cvt doesn't shift, or even have gears.
I would maybe consider at this point changing the tranny fluid and filter, as well as the center and rear diff fluid.
The tip trannies can be a little temperamental.

True CVTs don't have unique gears like most trannys, but my understanding is that Audi programmed into them a "shift" by dipping the RPM at selected points to make the driver feel like there is a shift. Again, I haven't driven one, so do not have first hand knowledge.

Default I had the similar question

I've never driven an Audi before. I've actually only driven two cars, '73 duster and '00 civic ex.

My audi is the 1.8T quattro. I'm guessing it has the TipTronic? idk, I'm new to all of this. It has an + / - side shifter next to my Drive.

Anyway, just got this yesterday and have been driving it around. Shifting from 2 to 3 to 4 and back down is perfectly fine. However going from 1 to 2 feels like it kicks/hesitates and same from 2 to 1. My dad hooked it up to see if there were any errors and there are none.

Is this how it normally drives with the TipTronic? I've read that is normal because of the type of gear box that it is... again, I'm new to all of this, and maybe I'm just being a little paranoid (I've had a lot of bad luck the last 6 months)...

Any reassurance my car is fine and I'm just not used to this type of car? lol

So is it normal for my car to shift like this like I have read else where? Or should it be 100% smooth? It's not like something is knocking around... more like it takes it a while before it shifts into 2.
