2003 Avant Alarm Problems

Greetings,
I replaced a failing battery recently. Before replacing the battery, the alarm would often go off after locking the car with the remote (distinct from the 4 beep problem, the alarm would fully trigger). I had hoped the new battery would clear this up, but after 3 weeks, there hasn't been any improvement.
About 30% of the time after pushing the lock on the keyfob, the doors lock, pause, then the alarm goes off instead of the "beep" signifying that it is armed. If you lock it with a door open, the alarm always goes off when you shut the door.
I checked with VAG-COM, and I pulled an alarm control unit communications error. Clearing the code hasn't improved the situation.
Any hints or suggestions regarding this problem?
Thanks in advance.

I know you have a new battery, but I suspect the alarm has a rechargable battery that is depleted and needs to get recharged. Try hooking up a battery charger to your new main battery under the hood and set it on trickle and leave it overnight.
If that fails, try the solution on the linked page to replace the actual battery, but that's much more of a PITA solution.
