are 245/45/17 tires unsafe for our stock sport rims?

IMO, there is enough grip without adding the last 10mm. Steering feel, effort, tramlining and hydroplaning are increased. I dunno if that's what you mean by "safe". Did a tire retailer tell you that? As far as if it too wide for the 7" stock rim, no. Is it 7in? Anyway, too wide is ok, too skinny is bad though.

I didn't notice until I got in the car and drove off to work a few miles away. Talking to the retailer they assured me that using the 245 tire on the OEM rim was perfectly safe from a safety perspective. I was going to leave it configured this way based on this assumption.
But after looking at the car awhile with the new tires, the tires stick out from the wheels slightly more than my old stock primacy's and make the tires look less "low profile" if that makes any sense. Definitely changed the look of the car in a negative way IMO.
Talked to the retailer they agreed to switch them out with 235 S-03's tomorrow.
