Default 3.0 rough idle ???

Has anyone else experienced an intermittent rough idle on the 3.0? The check engine light is not on and the dealer can't find anything wrong. Any ideas? Thanks.

Default Yep... seems to occur with some of us 3.0 guys. They supposedly smoothed out the idle more on (m)

the 2003s, and some people with 2002s say they never have a rough idle with the 3.0. Mine always has at random times - seems like when the engine is cold or at least for a few minutes after starting.

I did start noticing recently with VAG-COM that I have some random misfires occuring in cylinders 3 and 4 when the idle is rough. I'm suspecting it's from starting-to-fail ignition coils.

Go to another dealer, like Don Rosen.

Default 3.0 Rough idle also

Same situation. Dealer claims nothing wrong. It seems to happen more when it is hot out or I just ran the car hard. The only thing I can try and do is find a consistant situation and describe it to the dealer so they can create it. Other than that I am clueless. Without an LED warning my dealer says there is nothing wrong.

Default the wide angle V causes a rough idle

That's what I've read, anyway.

Should that turn the check engine light on?

Default Yeah, when I watch with VAG-COM, the ignition timing is just continuously being adjusted (more)

if it's not the coils (since it's done it since day one, it probably isn't), then I think the ECU is just over-doing it with trying to keep emissions to the absolute minimum. It's trying to hit a perfect balance with the idle mixture, and it's just not possible sometimes.

For 2003, they probably changed the way it handles idling.

You would think so, since it's OBD-II, but it doesn't. No DTCs are being set from the misfires.

Default Well, you can go to another dealer and see what they say (more)

I'm wondering if your dealer called the Audi tech line to see if this is a known issue, etc.

Who knows, if enough people complain and it's just a software thing in the ECU, maybe Audi will issue a software update that dealers can flash the ECU with. But, there has to be complaints for that to happen.

I'm just not sure if the rough idle could be partially caused by all these crap ignition coils. Without knowing what is failing in the coils, it's hard to say if they work perfectly until the point of total failure, or if they operate poorly before that as well.
