32,000 miles (3 years old in 2 weeks) and my Steering Rack is completely bunched!!!!!

Over the last few months I noticed my Steering was becoming a little heavy and when I was driving on Motorways the car was always weaving left to right, not severe but enough to have to constantly keep adjusting the wheel. When I turned the steering wheel to a full lock it used to make noise as if there was something wrapped around it, so I brought it to my dealer who had a look at it, he said they had to remove some part which wraps around the rack where it goes through the engine bay bulk head, he will order in a new one and in the mean time I could have my car back.
So 4 weeks later (still waiting for the garage to call me back in to have the part fitted) driving my car home from work last Wednesday evening I noticed a loud noise every time I turned the steering wheel, it was so loud when I was turning into my house there was some kids playing ball and they stopped to see what the noise was coming from. It sounded as if the power steering pump was running dry. Anyway rang my dealer who asked me to drive it into the garage the next morning. This I did and about 3 miles from the garage the power steering went completely. It was like driving a tank.
The garage rang me on Thursday evening to tell me the rack is broken beyond repair. My Warranty is out by 4 weeks and he says Audi are not interested. The bill is going to come to around €3000.00 inc labour. I said I'm not really interested in how much it comes to as far as I am concerned it is the Garages fault. I believe this is a direct result of the missing part. So I am now waiting again to hear from the garage to see if they will cover the costs. What do you think my chances are and also has this happened to any one else????? I bought my car second hand from a main Audi dealer 1 year and 1 month ago and they gave me a I year warranty. The car is a B6 A4 1.8T

that they informed you to drive without. Sounds like a strong case if the parts are related.

dealer said that this was an issue amoung the 2002 & 2003 model years. You need to take this up with Audi directly or the regional office. Since the dealer took out a part and it was on order, the rack replacement should be covered.
