Default 6-speed transmission failure at 2-yrs, 13k miles

Yes, I'm a monster. I drive my car hard -- hard by the standards of this board, even. And I know that the shift into second is slow, but I push it through as quickly as it will go on a regular basis, at redline. I expect my car to be able to handle this, and I know that if I'd bought the BMW I was considering, this wouldn't be a problem.

So at my 2-year service I mention that the second gear shift just started grinding a little when shifting at high rpm when the tranny is cold, and I think I'm wearing out my 2nd gear synchro. They decided not to fix it, to let it get worse before they bother. Now, less than three weeks later, something broke in there and the whole force required and dynamic around the shifts into 1st, 2nd, and reverse is screwed up.

To all you with 6-speeds, be afraid. Be very afraid. Transmission failure at 13,000 miles is not a good thing.

To all you others, what do I win? Isn't there some sort of prize for breaking a transmission this quickly?

I'd appreciate it if anyone could share a similar story with their A4, if any such stories exist.

Default Just like the incidents of the clutch failure in the new S4....

see the Audi Club Quattro Quarterly magazine for the article on that.

Default No problem with my 6-speed 3.0 after 30,250 miles.

In fact, it feels better now than it did the first 10k miles.

Default You win the usage of a loaner car while yours is being repaired.

Also, BMW doesn't make transmissions, they use ZF and Getrag I believe for the manual transmissions, same as Audi. So you might still see a premature failure on a BMW. But it's all probability of failure right? If 9,000 out of 10,000 transmissions can handle rough treatment, will you get one of the thousand, or one of the rest of the populatioin?

Default Uh, this is a joke, right?

If I throw a rock through one of my windows on my A4, it will break. And I'll bet you that if you throw it through a BMW's windows it might just do the same thing.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR DUDE! NOTHING IS UNBREAKABLE IN THIS WORLD!
