Default 90k timing belt failure?

Broke timing belt with 91k on the engine at 80mph

did the engine:

destroy the valve train?
swallow values?
damage pistons?

am I buying:

new heads?
pistons?
valve train?

historically, what's the usual damage to one's bank account
tia for all-y'alls insight on this

Default ohhhhhhhhh boy....methinks that's gonna hurt ya

don't know what the usual damage is, but can tell you it's going to be up there...damage from a timing belt breaking isn't gonna be cheap...did your replace the belt @ or around 60k? what year is your car?

Default Unfortunately could be all of the above...

It is an interference engine after all. So, there is the distinct possibility of the valves getting bent, punching a valve through the piston, etc. The fastest way to tell if major damage was done is to pull the heads and do a visual inspection. Sorry to hear about your problem. Don't be surpised if you get scolded from others on why you waited so long to change it. Hope everything works out well, and the damage was kept to a minimum.

Default A question for the board re: timing belt

I dont have the owner's manual in front of me to find the answer, but what is stated in the manual regarding when a timing belt should be changed?

Default If it's coming out of your pocket, i'd go independent shop and a used motor...

for a few thousand or you could go rebuilt (basically new) for about 5-7K. Sorry about the failure. 60K is the unofficial time to change them. cheers! Mike

Default 105k was in the owners manual

but there was a recent settlement regarding a class action lawsuit over timing belt issues by Audi owners....the result of which had Audi changing the recommmendation to 80k (still to high imho...most folks on here do it at 60k)

Default he'd have a fight w/ Audi for it, but it might be one worth fighting

since the settlement was recent he might be able to get Audi to cover it
