Since my v6 Passat 4motion was totalled a couple weeks ago I have decided its time to step up and get the A4
Found what appears to be a good deal but in another state. Fortunately I my mother and brother both live there so plan to have them give a preliminary test drive for me.
Looking for any advice on things to watch out for on an 03 A4 3.0 Quattro with 70000 miles. Any 'should ask' questions? known issues with that year / model?
I have the carfax report - flawless, have communicated with the owner, a woman who babies the car. Has a long commute, car is garaged at home and work, she inherited a family members car (06 A6) so nolonger needs this one. She even gave me her service writers name and number who happens to be the same rep my mother deals with on her 4.2 A6. She also just replaced the timing belt
Asking 16,500 - Seems like a no-brainer and hope to book a flight out. Any advice is appreciated.

don't forget: when they did the TB, did they do the Water pump? there is a fuel pump recall, was that completed?

While putting up a question of mine, I saw your question and thought I reply. Our's is an 03 3L w/ 60K.
1) Fuel pump was under recall (check to see if yours is included).
2) Wiper motor slowed down then froze all together.
3) Front headlight washer stopped popping up to spray fluid (maybe good since it drinks fluid in the winter/salt season).
4) Hydrolocked, seized the engine at 50K. Now have a new engine for $10K paid by insurance since it was deemed weather damage. Obviously unique to the circumstance but if you search hydrolock, you'll see I'm not the only one.
5) Battery light aporadically comes on but dealer can't find problem and this is with new battery as of two days ago as well.
6) Sunroof switch has a notorious problem with going flakey. You'll slide to half open and it will not open or open all the way. Sometimes if you don't even touch it, it'll open by itself. Rheostat on the dial was blamed. The replacement was redesigned and works well.
Do a search, you'll see a lot but overall it's a solid car with a design that doesn't date as quick. Just wish it had Lexus/Honda reliability but keeping all the German handling and build quality.
Best of luck!!!

Someone totaled my 98.5 A4 2.8LQM, and I replaced it with my current 03 3.0L. It was a nice upgrade. I bought mine with over 100K miles on it and the car hasn't given me any trouble except for a couple of broken vac lines and the ghost sunroof (which just needs to be cleaned) The car was very clean with all it's dealer records. I've had it for a year now and I'm just about to replace a torn CV boot and a couple of control arm bushings are worn out. I do my own maintenance so it's not a big deal to me, but maintenance like this can be very expensive.
All in all the car is very reliable and just great to drive. just plan for scheduled maintenance and you'll be fine.

Like others have said, get the vehicle scanned for codes and if you can take it to a known indy shop to have a trained mechanic look it over that would be great. Good luck with it.

One thing only, I would bargain on that price. I paid a touch more than that a year ago and about 13K miles less for an Avant with Sport package(more rare).

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/1069986.phtml</a
