never heard that audi had trouble with that. MB had many S classes burn up in the mid 90s.
You should look into the lemon laws in your state. Maybe not a bad idea to get some help from a lawyer. My experience is that the manufacturer of a faulty product is the one to be held liable. I would assume that Audi is liable in this case. I am not a lawyer though.
And I don't think the insurance company just wants to total the car if it was caused by a faulty product. Definately seek some legal advice.
Good luck and keep us updated!!!

They need to do an inspect on the car and see where the fire started. It might not be a "faulty product" but someone could have done something to it or something.
Also depending on the insurance, this might not make her insurance go sky high! She might have to pay the deductible but her rate might not change because she isn't at fault but that depends on the insurance. AAA for example, would not raise their rate on you because of this. Assuming it was vandelism or something like that.
I would consult a lawyer on this one as well. Your friend shouldn't get screwed from both sides because of politics. If the inspection shows it was a electrical fire or something then it should be Audi since it is their product... if it was something else, her insurance might be the one that has to take it.
Either way, sorry to hear about this. Let us know how it plays out.
Oh as for the loaner - think the insurance should be able to provide a rental for 30 days while the inspection and what not is happening. Ask about that one.
