My 2002 A4 is hard to fill with gas. The pump keeps shutting off. Dealer says it is due to a faulty check valve in gas tank inlet pipe. That makes sense but they say it will cost $2000 to fix because the part is integrated into gas tank reuiring replacement of the gas tank. Any ideas?

Have you tried to vary the insertion depth and angle of the gas pump fill nozzle? If not, try using less insertion depth in the tank port, and vary the angle a little bit, up/down. Also, does the tendancy to trip off the pump nozzel, vary with how much fuel is in the tank?

not sure if it's your problem or not, but
overfilling at the pump by my car's previous owner caused a saturation in the cannister that caused hard starts and trouble keeping the gas pump from shutting off.
it was something like 350 to fix..

open the gas cap. Once the pressure has equalized the pump operates normally (not shutting off prematurely).
I have read of several cases of this with the B6's.
