A4 vs. A6
We are currently looking at either an A4 1.8T or A6 3.0. Dealer claims to be able to "Deal" on left over '02 A6's. Like the room in the A6. We currently drive an BMW '88 325is and an '97 740i. This car will replace the 740i - wonderful to drive, nightmare to maintain.
Any guidance as to pros, cons of each model would be appreciated

They can deal anytime they want to.
If you are getting the A6 get the quattro, and maybe look toawrds the 2.7t if its within your budget.
A reasonably equipped 2002 A6 2.7t is around 39600. the 2002 A6 3.0 is around 35800.
