Owned several other brands (Honda, Toyota, Chevy, Ford, Nissan) & never had a prob with AC odor

Well, I haven't had a problem with my A4 either, so... :) Perhaps you always had them in recirc,

Try coding the A/C to the Japanese code that maintains the mode when turned off, with a VAG tool
