advice for taking pictures.

hey guys i need some help taking pictures, is it cuz im not using a tripod or what? how come all my pics come out pretty blurry. new digicam too...canon powershot A70 3.2 megapixels.
am i supposed to take the pictures in very high res? and then shrink them on PS? or...wat
what setting am i supposed to use? heres an example of how horrible they come out.

Make sure it's lit up just right. Have the light hit your subjects the way you want. In the first pic, you have good backlight, but lacking key light.
Then yes, play with the shutter and aperature, you'll learn by experimenting. Also adjust your ISO or ASA. Use a higher number like 400 in darker situations.
