I called today to schedule the 5000 mile oil change (and a couple of other small warranty repairs) and the service rep at my dealer mentioned that Audi "strongly" recommends against this. I said that 10000 miles seemed excessive to me. What he explained was that he used to feel that way until somebody at Audi explained that the factory oil has some "special" detergents that are needed for proper break in and that it shouldn't be changed until the recommended 10000 miles. Then I asked, What about after 10k miles? He said it was fine if I wanted to change the oil every 5k miles then. Again he stated that the factory oil needed to stay in for 10k miles.
Since this is my first Audi I guess I'll go with his suggestion and after that I'll change it every 5000 miles.
Anyway, just thought I'd share this and was wondering what else others have heard on this lately.
And in case you're wondering, the other couple of things that I need to get repaired are the Horn (stopped working and now only get a hard-to-hear high pitch horn) and a loose door handle.

I only drive 10k a year now. To me a full year seems excessive. I think I'll be sticking with the 5k. By then the engine has got to be broken in.

10K with the special(low viscosity) Audi break-in oil will give you the better ring seating than changing at 5K....your call!

... am not buying the "special oil" rhetoric. If that were the case, why can't Audi change the oil @ 5k, and use this magical oil again???
Call me a cynic, but I think it's purely an economic thing. Audi ran the numbers, and this was the result. It sounds like a business decision to me. I'm changing mine @ 5k.
April/verdegrrl, you seem to really know what's up in terms of the Audi hardware. What do you think/recommend???? ThanX!!

to do with the, "Our cars are low maintaince vehicles" which might comprimise the the engine in favor of shallow advertising slogans?
I'm no engine/oil expert, but I do know some car
companies do this very thing.
