I have read the instructions to install a new air filter, but I just cannot get the clearance to get the old one out and put the new one in. Getting the snorkel off is easy, but what else do you need to remove from there? I called the dealer and asked them and they said it was a real pain in the a$$ to get in and that was it. I just spend $40 on a K&N and don't want to ruin it getting it in. Any constructive ideas will be appreciated.

I thought that with a turbo, the more air the better - provided the K&N flows better as advertised.

I've had my K & N filter on the car since 22K miles back in 2000 when I first put it on. In that car, you can hear the turbo spool. Also you can feel not a lot but a little difference in how the car responds to acceleration from the driver. I now have 105K on the K & N filter and took it out to clean. I had it drying on the dryer at home and my girlfriend was over. She tried to speed up the drying time between washing and oil and used a hair dryer. The cotton filter media got messed up. I went to Autozone and ordered a new one for $39.99 plus tax came out to around $44 and some change. No shipping charges.
In my opinion the K&N filter is great, but don't over oil it. If you do the cleanings right, then it is a good investment. I know for my passat a regular air filter costs $19.99 at autozone. So replacing that filter every 12K miles, I would have spent something near$60 (without tax). So I saved $20, and prevented trash from going to the landfill.

Did it help out on the bottom end? That is where my A4 is a real dog - from a standing stop. I did clean out a lot of bugs from the "pre filter" and that may have helped a little.

I had a K&N filter on my previous car and it made absolutely no difference. Granted it was a 2.2L Camry, but still. I'm not planning to use the K&N for the A4.

It was a pain in the rear at first - but what I found was I was trying to open the box without taking the entire assembly out. After I just said "screw it" and started working on taking it apart from the rest of the engine.
Also, don't expect much from the K&N. I haven't noticed anything significant as far as performance. For me, I just wanted a reusable filter that I could wash and clean myself as I have had experience with drop ins before and they never produce good gains.
Remove the heat shield, the MAF connector plug, that should help get the airbox out which will allow you to remove the old filter and clean out the prefilter if need be.
