Not a waste for me. Been running one since 10000 miles.Now at 70K on same MAF. Saves tons of fuel..
I originally was stock when I put it in...gained about 50-60 miles more per tank of fuel.

in my b5 passat..it did to a slight degree..i don't have any proof other than me driving the car...
with and without the filter. There is a change and you can tell. Some how a regular air filter forms some kind of restriction i guess for epa ratings.
