So I go into Rancho Chrysler Jeep Dodge in San Diego today to test drive a new SRT-4. I loved the car, an '05 with limited slip, sunroof, and even the color I like. First of all, the sticker price was 5k over MSRP, so just under 26k. Fine. Second, I checked the Kelly Blue Book on my 1 year old Premium/Sport pkg A4 and its trade in is just under 24k. Okay I think, if the dealer wants to work with me, they will give me a little extra on the trade-in, take off a percentage point off sticker, and by dropping a couple grand for tax/lic I can drive off the lot in a new SRT-4.

Wrong.

The trade-in monkey comes back with an offer of 18.5k for the A4, and sticker price stands. I was like, "Hmmm... well we definitely have some work to do here." I tell him I know the KBB trade-in value, and he's not anywhere in the ballpark. Homeboy, who it was clear if he wasn't working in a dealership would be breaking rocks somewhere, won't budge. "Your car's only worth at the most 19k," he says. My car is clean, looks stock, and has no blemishes. Suffice it to say, I walk. I don't need to drop 9k for a cheaper car. Hell if I put 9k into my A4 it would be 10 times more dope than that SRT-4!!

Don't think I'll be visiting a dealership for ghetto cars again. Flames/n00b comments fire away.

Default SRT-4 is a koo car, and if you can get it for MSRP or below then you have a nice rocket for close to

20k! There are some nice turbo upgrades you can do aswell and make over 300 whp easily.

Default It's been so long since I've felt torque steer.

I hated fwd with 90hp. I'm sure I'd hate it with 250# torque- Quaife or not....

Default well i was only offered $16500 for my 02 A4 3.0CVT with premium package only 6000 miles on car (more

Hell, you got a better offer than I did and this was before the news of the new B7. I went to look at an 04 MB 230K Sedan. Dealership said Audi's have horrible reliablity issues and so the car depreciates more. I just kept the car.

Default I just couldn't do it either way. Man, it's still a Neon. I don't care how many ponies it has.

I wouldn't trade my car in for an econo-racer but if I had to it'll be a WRX. I don't think of those as econo cars, but performance wise I'd rather have the Sube over the Dodge. Just my opinion.

Default Is there a reason why dealers do that?

Aside from the obvious that they want more of your money. I mean, everyone knows you can sell it yourself and get a lot more money. Are they trying to offend/p*ss off the customer by offering a low trade-in value?

I was really suprised that they let me walk away like that, at least offer to work with me on it! I'm not a salesman but even I know you don't make money letting customers walk, esp if they are really interested in your product.
