Another door ding prevention idea... Am I a glutton for punishment or what?

Magnetic vinyl. I use it a lot on my business vehicles for signage. It's thick enough to protect against all but the very hardest hits. It can be cut to fit any part of the door. When applied to a smooth surface, it won't slide around. It can be painted or colored with vinyl lettering material, so as to be inconspicuous. If kept clean, and applied and removed with care to fairly clean, well-waxed paint, it shouldn't cause damage.
I think I'll cut a couple pieces to fit between the side moulding and door handles and color them to match the car. Hopefully those envious, nice-car-hating, vandalizing dick-heads we fear won't notice this stuff.
OK, abuse me!

you know, you press the button on the key fob and hardened titanium-vanadium alloy armour plate folds out over the car... and of course if someone tries to vandalise it, the wheel hubs open up and drop fuel-air bombs outside

Do a web search on Park Smart Magnetic Door Guide and you'll see something similar.
Here's one link to a place selling it:
