I am about 24 months into my 39 month lease. The problem is that I am over on mileage (38k currently, 39k allowed on the lease) mostly due to a change in where I live and where I work. Either way I estimate that I am going to have about a $3,000 penality when I turn it in due to mileage. Is it better to break it now and get into something new, or just wait?

2 years into a four year lease on a Silver 2001 1.8TQMPX.
I was a little under on miles so not too upside down. Got into an '03 BonB 1.8TQMSPXB. A much better car altogether - although the window switches are taking some getting used to
Your being over on miles to the tune of +$3k will add about $65 to a monthly payment of a new lease.
