Anyone have clogged fuel filter?

Anyone have clogged fuel filter?
If so, how did you know?
B6s have been out for some time now and we're racking up the miles. I recently asked the dealer to replace the fuel filter but they advised against it. Said it wasn't time yet and it would be a large expense to do so.
I see how dirty the air pre-filter and main air filter get and I wonder how dirty the fuel filter is after pumping thousands of gallons of fuel through it. . . . .
