Anyone have experience with engine oil pumps / recovery systems?

I have a friend at work who purchased an oil recovery pump for his home garage (he has an Audi and a BMW). It's sold here in town by marine shops and is designed to suck oil out rather than have to drain the engine from below (hard to do with a boat while its in the water and/or has an inboard engine). Basically, it allows him to change the oil without getting under the car and potentially getting oil everywhere. He sticks a small tube down the dipstick tube and with one 'charge' of the pump (by 'pumping' up pressure - or vacuum - in the pump). It will suck about 4 liters at a time.
Apparently BMW has moved to a similar process with many, if not all, of their newer cars and has mounted the oil filters close to the top of the engine as well, so the whole oil and filter change can happen without getting under the car. I was thinking of using this pump to do oil changes in between my regular services. I would not change the filter - just the oil.
Anyone used one of these? Anything wrong with changing the oil and not the filter at the same time? Again - the filter (and oil) would get changed at the regular service interval. But the oil would be changed twice as often.
Pump costs about $80CDN

Apparently, that's how Mercedes dealers change oil on the new MBs. It's suppose to suck out more oil than you can by draining through the drain plug. I have a fear of getting under the car, so this works perfect for me.

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=390306&a mp;R=390306<

Don't worry about the filter, Mann filters say 2 years / 30km on them. You are just freshening the fluid, it can't hurt at all and costs under $20. Other fluids can be done too, like hydrolic. I use mine more often on other peoples' cars b/c mine are pretty easy to drain from below and I'm not crawling under my female cousin's ****ty Passat.

http://www.jerrybleach.com/pelapumps.html</a
